Birthday Goodies!

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

As most of you know, it was my 24th birthday on Saturday 25th, and very fun it was too! We were very lucky with the weather, as it was a beautifully sunny day – especially in comparison to the current monsoon weather we’re experiencing!

I started my birthday celebration on Friday at work, with cakes for my co-workers! I had a half day, and also received a few cards & a mountain of chocolate from Sarah – she knows me well, and rightly said that fancy chocolates would be wasted on me! Hayley got me a box of milk tray.. mmm – the only boxed chocolates I like!

Yummy Chocolate

Friday evening, James & I treated Gayley to Frankie & Benny’s where I had a scumptious burger & a delicious banana sundae.. mmmm. After the meal we waddled to the cinema at Broadway Plaza and settled in for the long haul – Harry Potter time! I LOVED it. The HP films just get better & better each time, as the actors grow and develop. I can’t wait for the next two films (the last book is in two parts), and I’m going to re-read the books as soon as I finish the Anne of Green Gables series, which I’m working my way through for what must be the 5th time at the moment.

On my birthday, we woke up early in the morning, thanks to a nearby house alarm that started at 6am and went off continuously for two and a half hours. Argh. Anyway, we closed the bedroom windows to dull the sound, James brought me coffee in bed and then presented me with my cards & gifts! When I was a child we all used to pile onto Mum & Dads bed to open our birthday presents, and I still like to do my opening first thing in the morning, preferably in bed!

Presents!! Wonderful Wife

James got me the new Katie Fforde book ‘Love Letters’ which I’ve wanted since it came out – it’s taken a lot of self restraint for me to resist buying it myself, she is one of my favourite authors! He also gave me the Sims 3 (YAY!), dangly cat earrings, a really pretty earring holder (I love dangly earrings!), a pretty t-shirt & some chocolate eclairs.

From family… My sister already gave me an antique sewing machine, a Radley handbag mirror, and the minature CK one collection. Mum & dad gave me a sewing machine a few weeks ago & Ruth (my mother-in-law) has given me the Readers Digest Complete Guide to Sewing that was on my Amazon wishlist. James’s Grandparents sent me a lovely necklace which was so sweet of them! My grandparents sent me a cheque, and I received a handful of cards as well, yay! None of them were signed ‘Michael’ (my brother) though! :-P

Earring Holder

The red & silver drop earrings on the earring holder were from Gayle, who gave me a matching necklace as well (and crunchy M& Ms!!). Suzi gave me a boots gift card & I have had a WH Smith gift card today as well, so I have some shopping to do! Michelle & Mia presented me with a very cute Tatty Teddy bear which Mia said was Homily, and Tria bought me my first moleskine notebook, which I’m wanted for ages!

For the rest of my birthday, we headed to ASDA to load up on BBQ supplies, and then came home and tidied the house like fury, as it was still in a big decorating mess! By the time people arrived it was quite respectable, apart from the kitchen which still had a pile of washing up to do!

The BBQ was great fun, James kept us well supplied with a constant stream of food and there was good conversation to go with it! I had a great time hanging out with my friends, chatting & laughing. I managed to get the drinking spot on as well, a nice little buzz from the smirnoff ices & cider I was enjoying, but I wasn’t even very tipsy or drunk, just relaxed. Hurrah!

And a 3 year old climbed me. Lots of times. It was highly amusing. And then we watched Monsters Inc.

Since my birthday I have mostly been reading (I finished Love Letters in one day on Sunday and loved it!), watching Veronica Mars episodes, or playing on the Sims 3 on my iMac. More to come on that later, but for now check out my temporary iMac configuration, with me crossed legged on the sofa & the iMac on the desk chair.. our desk is still dismantled because of the decorating!

Sims 3 iMac on the chair, me on the sofa

Thanks for all the birthday messages and cards I’ve received!!

Things I love Thursday

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

This has been a good week, it’s time to share the love :-). The things I love this week, are..

James getting a new job

As some of you may know, James’s current job has been a bit shaky lately, with the recession kicking in and all that. So he decided to look for a new job at Easter, and has been applying to things since then. He had a few interview offers, the third of these being last Friday at a company in Stratford – and I’m very pleased to say he got the job! The interview was at 4pm, and they offered him the job less than two hours afterwards! I’m a very proud wife right now. He’s actually really excited to be starting a new challenge, as it is something completely different to what he does now; currently he does web development, converting designs into functioning sites – the new job will be about developing an in house system. Still using the same technologies though – PHP & MySQL. Yay for James!

Twitnote going live

I’m still not over my excitement about our new site going live, I’m really proud of what James & I accomplished together. There are lots of ideas in the pipeline still about Twitnote, so no doubt you’ll be hearing about those soon! I’m finding it really useful for sending myself links & things – a lot nicer than my old method of emailing myself with a link & cluttering up my inbox. The bit.ly service is great for this because you can use the bookmarklet to shorten the link of the page you’re on, then tweet it to @twnote to share with your twitter followers and remind yourself of the link!

Building up my design portfolio

At the moment I’m working on several projects, which is great because I really want to build up my design portfolio and see if I can earn some money from my hobby (or at least break even on what I pay for my web hosting!). My current project is Pure Genius.

Roast Beef, yum

Last night I cooked Roast Beef, and it was yum – my roast potatoes were delightfully fluffy and crispy at the same time. That is all.

BookMooch

Yay for new books! I just got two in the post today – Going the Distance by Christina Jones, and the next Kathy Reichs that I need, Monday Mourning. I’m looking forward to reading them! It’s so nice to have a good long “to read” list and to have given away some books that I didn’t want – and all it’s cost is the postage! Read more about BookMooch in my previous post about it.

Other things that get my love this week are: the sunshine today as it’s made me feel all bouncy walking to & from work, Melton Mowbray pork pies, Cadbury Clusters, listening to Counting Crows on my iPhone,

A Northern Adventure

Friday, May 1st, 2009

I should have written this post over a week ago but never mind!

Following our Easter Trip to Dorset, James & I headed North to visit a multitude of family members! After we got back to Birmingham on Wednesday (15th) we unpacked, did a washload, slept, repacked, and headed off again on our travels on Thursday (16th) – as you can tell it was a very restful holiday, our Easter week off!

We headed to Newcastle1 first of all, where we went straight to Uncle Richard’s2 house. Homily disgraced us within 10 minutes of our arrival – as James and I sat down to rest & have a coffee, we suddenly noticed that our little dog had disappeared into the kitchen when we weren’t watching.. Now, Richard’s dog Robbie is of the mindset that food is just not that important in the grand scheme of things. As a result of this, in their household a bowl full of dog biscuits can be left on the floor to be nibbled on throughout the day. Of course, this concept is completely incomprehensible to our greedy little Terrier, and so she was delighted to be greeted by half a bowl of yummy dog food upon our arrival. The amount of food the dog ate was roughly equal to a week’s worth of her normal food – which left her a very fat doggie for a day or two!

  1. For clarification – we visited Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. I say this because I grew up near Stafford, and whenever we mentioned Newcastle to each other, we meant Newcastle-Under-Lyme.. Newcastle-Upon-Tyne was just ‘The Other Newcastle’. [↩]
  2. Richard is James’s Uncle on his father’s side. [↩]

Valentines day!

Sunday, February 15th, 2009

Had a lovely day today, it began with an exchange of gifts & cards, and a cup of coffee in bed :-). James bought me a slab of dairy milk and some thorntons goodies – he knows me so well, none of those fancy boxes of chocolates for me!! I’m happier with my choccy bar and bags of fudge butter tablet! He also managed to find a valentines hedgehog soft toy – when I was younger I used to collect them and stashed away at my parents house, in the back of a cupboard, is a black sack stuffed with over 60 soft toy hedgehogs. I did try naming them all when I was collecting them but started to run out of suitable names beginning with ‘H’!

After a leisurely morning lunch, we popped over to Ruth’s house to let out the dogs (though I must admit I spent more time playing with the puppy!), then headed to the photographers (Studio Cru) to pick our wedding photos. It took two hours and my eyes were a touch fuzzy by the time we’d looked at about 600 photos! We managed to narrow it down to the ~55 we’re having in the album though. It was a lot easier than I expected actually. Now we just wait for the PDF file to be sent to us for approval, and a month or so after that for the album to arrive.

James took me to dinner at my favourite Chinese restaurant, Lychee Garden, which is on the Hagley Road. We usually eat from their buffet menu but they had a special set valentines menu on tonight. I really enjoyed it because there were a few dishes I wouldn’t order normally – it was nice having a chance to try new flavours! I also liked not having to make any decisions – other than whether to finish off with banana fritter or ice cream! It was a lovely meal :-).

After dinner we slumped in the living room and proceeded to be very geeky – I managed to get my MacBook triple booting OS X, Windows 7 and Ubuntu, and James spent the evening setting up his server! What a romantic conclusion to valentines day!

My life in bullet form!

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

  • The apprentice final tonight, I’m quite worried about it. Lee & Clare are on the same team, so if they don’t win then one of the weasels (Alex & Helene) will win and that’s just NOT right. Out of the four left Clare is best – she’s listened and got better over the series. Lee lied on his cv – how stupid was that?!
  • I’m gone and got addicted to Big Brother. Oh dear. That’s all I have to say about that.
  • Homily had a midnight snack of MY ginger biscuits, naughty animal. Luckily there weren’t that many left.
  • James bought me flowers. 1, 2, 3.. awwwwwwwww!
  • After forsaking every other birthday present and pledging my payrise (got one yesterday, yay) to pay the contract, James is buying me an iphone for my birthday next month :D
  • SIX MONTHS AND ONE DAY UNTIL MY WEDDING DAY ARRRRGGGHHH YAYAYAYAYAY
  • Which means.. six months and 3 days till I go to Mexico lol.
  • Lots of stuff coming up! Britain’s Got Talent tour on Monday, Drayton Manor a week on Sunday, o2 wireless festival next month, as well as Isle of White trip & going to see Lee Mead as Joseph! Life is very exciting right now.
  • I’m looking forward soo much to this weekend, can’t wait to just kick back and relax, tidy the flat, walk the dog. Bliss!!
  • I had a great weekend. More on that later..
