10 Guilty Pleasures

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

This week the topic is ‘Guilty Pleasures’ for Ten on Tuesday, which I thought was an interesting one. Here are my top 10 guilty pleasures…

10 for Tuesday

  1. Chocolate – this has to be my Number One weakness, and definitely a huge guilty pleasure! Everyone knows chocolate isn’t very good for you – but it can be very hard to resist a chilled bar of Dairy Milk! On a side note, have you tried the new Nibbles? They’re like chocolate buttons with a slither of caramel in – yum! Although, since someone said they look like nipples I can’t help but think Nibbles is a slightly unfortunate name choice!
  2. Curling up in front of the TV, snuggled in a blanket - an especially guilty pleasure if there is housework to be done (and there is always something that needs doing)!
  3. Reading an entire book in a day – I love reading, absolutely adore it. There is nothing more absorbing than getting settled in bed or on the sofa, and losing myself in a book for hours. I quite often read new books by my favourite authors in one sitting, including the last 3 Harry Potter books. A few weeks ago, I read 8 books (the Bridgerton series by Julia Quinn) in a week & a half – which included 3 books over the weekend!
  4. Indulging in fantasies about the future - including, but not limited to: winning the lottery, buying a house, going self employed with my web design, somehow miraculously ‘growing out’ of my headache conditions, etc… you get the idea.
  5. Ridiculously long lie ins on Sundays – I love lying in bed with my husband & talking (and we do a lot of laughing too), reading while he zonks back to sleep for a few more hours, cuddling Homily, and of course just having that one extra hour of shut-eye!
  6. Buying bits & pieces for crafting – usually on eBay. We don’t have a lot of money at the moment as we’re skimping quite a bit to pay off student debts, save up, etc.. so it’s a real guilty pleasure when I spend a bit of money shopping on eBay for things to add to my growing jewellery making/sewing/crocheting collection!
  7. ‘So bad they’re good’ TV programmes - my current favourite are America’s Next Top Model, Grey’s Anatomy, Dating in the Dark, and the Hasselhoff thing on Living. All wonderfully crap but oh so entertaining! This concept applies to films too – the really cheesy ones like High School Musical & Bruce Almighty.
  8. Eating out/Chinese takeaways – about once a month James & I try to treat ourselves either to a nice meal out (on a budget – we love the Sizzler chain or our fav all you can eat chinese restaurant Lychee Garden), or a chinese takeaway from one of our locals. Mmm!
  9. Playing games/doing puzzles – whether it’s on the Wii, iMac, DS lite or my iPhone, I love playing games, especially puzzle games. Things like the Professor Layton games get my mind some much needed exercise!
  10. New Technology – lusting over it, reading about it, buying it, playing with it – I love our computers and iPhones, DSes, Wii, etc. I make no secret of the fact I love Apple hardware & software, and am a complete geek!

What is your main guilty pleasure?

Things I Love Thursday

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

It’s that time again – these are the things I’ve been loving this week…

tilt

iPhone - I’ve had my shiny new white iPhone 3GS for two weeks now and I love love love it. It’s so easy to take ok quality videos (fine for youtube etc) and the camera is better. And it’s sooo much faster than the 3G, playing games and running apps is a much nicer experience. I love it! I’m glad I got the white one, it’s lovely to have that change – and it feels more like a new toy than it would have done if I’d picked black!

Project 365 – I decided to begin this project when I got my new iPhone, because I now have a 3 megapixel camera in my pocket at all times, that is capable of taking some gorgeous photos! I’m just finishing my second week of it & I already love the eclecticness of my daily photos. Some of them are arty farty pictures of things I have walked past/are in our house. Others are just a narration on what’s going on in my life on that day. When it is done with I think it will be a great reminder of the year.

TiLT: Things I Love Thursday!

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

tilt

It is Thursday once more, so it is time to reflect on the things you are thankful for this week. Today’s list includes…

No migraines for a few weeks! This is probably tempting fate to say this, but all I’ve had for a few weeks are the usual daily headaches with a few bad ones thrown in.. no migraines, woo! I’ve had to take low/medium doses of co codamol but no big dope-myself-up-&-pass-out-then-deal-with-unpleasant-side-effects has been required, so yay!

My husband – He bought me chocolate, took my birthday gift card spending, and has been cooking me yummy meals all week. I love him (and so I should, he is my husband!). A moment of appreciation for my lovely jubbily husband who brings me coffee in bed every morning!

The trip to Bristol at the weekend – meeting Hayleyat last was fab, as I was disappointed I missed the UK Lady Bloggers meetup! It was a great weekend and I love the chance to unwind, relax, enjoy myself, and stop stressing!

Reading books – I’ve been taking some time out over the last few weeks, to curl up & read a book or two. I love reading and it’s nice to have a chance to just chill out with a book. I’ve been using Stanza on my iPhone to read in bed, so I don’t have to keep James up with having the light on. I loved the new books by Katie Fforde & Sophie Kinsella, which I had for my birthday.. I will post my attempts at reviews sometime, I hope!

Veronica Mars – I’ve recently introduced James to the wonderful tv show that is/was Veronica Mars & he loves it! We’ve watched the entirety of Season 1 so far and he’s looking forward to getting stuck in to Season 2. I discovered VM while I was at university, but it has sadly been cancelled since then – though there are rumours of a film being made some time!

Also on the making me smile list today: Homily being hilarious and chewing everything she can find that tastes like food (James doesn’t find it so funny!), plans to get an iPhone 3GS next week, getting sedated making dental treatment easy peasy, skips, buying cheap as chips jewellery making supplies of ebay, updating my 101 in 1001 list (and crossing some things off!), writing letters (newstationery!), and evenings curled up with my husband playing sims3/relaxing/watching tv/laughing together.

TiLT: Things I Love Thursday

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

I have neglected this weekly meme for too long, but today is a good day so I am in the mood to love things!

tilt

My birthday – It’s my birthday on Saturday, woohoo! I’m having a BBQ with some of my friends in the evening, which (weather permitting) should be great fun! James & I are going to head to ASDA in the morning & load up with yummy supplies. Presents & cards have started arriving at the house, but I am being good and putting them to one side to save for Saturday afternoon (James is doing some last minute shopping in the morning)!

Our bedroom – we have finished decorating and I love love love it! We finished painting the walls & woodwork white over Sunday/Monday evening. Tuesday evening was spent painting the walls blue & last night we put all the furniture into it’s new places, and putting up some shelving, that kind of thing. It’s just such a nice room now, I know I will be happy to go & curl up there to read & relax much more than I used to. Especially since we moved a lot of our books in there (though there are still quite a few in other rooms!).

Half day tomorrow – I decided to take tomorrow afternoon off so I could finish sorting things out now the decorating of the two bedrooms is finished. So I will bring in cakes in the morning (for my bday), and then I have a annoying meeting about my headaches (which hopefully won’t ruin my day / weekend / birthday celebrations) and then I get to go home at lunchtime, woohoo. I get to be all OCD and organisational all on my own. Last night I spent ages sorting out my books into genres & authors so all my favourites are easy to find. And now over the next few days I get to be all organisey and sort out the spare room, bathroom & change things around downstairs a little bit too.

Harry Potter - I am going to see the new HP film tomorrow with Gayle & James, with a stop at Frankie & Benny’s first to eat! I haven’t been to F&B or to the cinema for ageees ‘cos our finances have been so bad this year, so it’s lovely to have a treat like this. Sort of an early birthday outing :-). Trivia fun: James & I’s first lunch as a married couple was at Frankie & Benny’s in Selly Oak because we had no food in the house and were off on honeymoon early the next day!

Other things I’ve been loving - Asda’s Pork & Apple sausages, M&Ms, Ginsters slices, getting Homily back after her tests (she’s been shaved!), Carly’s wedding, two more weddings in August, a trip to Bristol next weekend to see the Banksy exhibit with Hayles, shortbread & my new sewing machines which will see some action in August!

10 (oops.. 7) Favorite Places to Eat

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

10 for Tuesday

  1. Lychee Garden, Hagley Road – all you can eat cantonese/chinese restaurant with waitress service! A.Maze.Ing.
  2. Frankie & Benny’s, Selly Oak or Broadway Plaza
  3. The Red Lion (pub), Kings Heath
  4. The Packhorse (pub), Hollywood
  5. The Country Girl (pub), Selly Oak
  6. Cafe Rouge, Bullring
  7. Pretty much any Wetherspoons (hey, I’m poor!)

Other than those (can you tell I looove pub lunches), I generally prefer to get a takeaway and curl up on the sofa with a blanket, good food, my husband, and a good film on the tellybox. My favourite takeaway is chinese/cantonese food without a doubt, but I also love a good packet of chips with curry sauce.

Mmmm.. now I’m hungry.
